The Sunil Chhetri Show; Blue Tigers defeat Kenya 3-0

Mumbai:-

In an electrifying atmosphere at the Mumbai Football Arena, The Indian Football team defeated Kenya, 3-0. Indian Skipper Sunil Chhetri playing his hundredth international game scored two goals.

The 33 year old scored on a penalty at 68’ and another one at (90’+1)’. Chhetri now has 61 international goals only behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jeje Lalpekhula found the back of the net immediately after Chhetri’s first at 71’ giving no time for the Kenyans to recover from the penalty shoot.

No goal was scored in the first half because of the climatic conditions in Mumbai. The rain drizzles continued throughout the game. Water patches were formed on the ground causing restriction on the movement of the ball.

India couldn’t implement its game plan in the first half but came strongly in the second as the ball started to travel faster.

51% of the ball possession was with the Blue Tigers while 49% with the Kenyans. India shot 7 times on the target and converted 3 of those into goals while the Kenyans had 2 shots on the target and couldn’t convert any.

Indian defender Sandesh Jhinghan was extra-ordinary with his defense and received ‘Hero of the match’ for his acrobatic saves.

India are now on the top of the table with 6 points in the Intercontinental Cup while Kenya are second with 3 points. New Zealand and Chinese Taipei are yet to open their accounts.

Earlier to the match Chhetri appealed to the football fans to come and encourage them for the game to which the fans responded with a full house.

“We promise you that if that’s the kind of support we get every time we play for the country, we will give our lives on the pitch. India, this night was special because we were in this together. Those in the stands shouting, and the ones at home cheering – thank you!” Chhetri tweeted after the match.
