INDvENG 1st Test Day 4 : India Comes Crashing Down After Captain Kohli’s Exit

Edgbaston, Birmingham :

The match was beautifully set at the start of Day 4 as India needed 84 runs to register a historic victory while the English team needed 5 wickets to make their 1000th Test match memorable. India had pinned all their hopes on Captain Kohli who was unbeaten on 43 along with Dinesh Karthik on 18.

England’s leading wicket taker- James Anderson proved his mettle in the first over itself as Karthik edged one off to Malan. He made 20 runs.

Hardik Pandya came to the partner Kohli. The match seemed within India’s grabs as Pandya looked in fine touch. The duo added 29 runs until Kohli was trapped in front of the stumps by Ben Stokes. He made a gritty 51.

Three balls later Stokes got Mohammad Shami and the rest followed the suit. Adil Rashid got Ishant Sharma (11) and Ben Stokes finished the game by claiming the wicket of Hardik Pandya (31).  Stokes finished with 4 wickets while Anderson and Broad got 2 wickets a piece.

India were on a quest on 194 runs, fell short of 31 runs. If India would have won this match, it would have been their biggest chase in England. India had last chased 176 in 1971.

Meanwhile, Indian Captain Virat Kohli scored 200 runs in the match becoming the 2nd Indian captain to score 200 runs in a match in England, MAK Pataudi is the first.

Sam Curran became England’s youngest player to receive the Man of the Match award. He picked up 4 wickets in the first innings and one more in the 2nd innings. He showed his all round skills with the bat too. He scored 24 in the first innings and a man winning 63 in the second.
