Assam NRC Row : Lone Woman CM Not Included In Draft

Guwahati:

The name of Assam’s lone woman chief minister Syeda Anowara Taimur is missing from the NRC (National Register of Citizenship) draft that was released on 30 July. Taimur, was the first Muslim Chief Minister in India.  She served from December 6, 1980, to June 30, 1981.

Taimur, who currently resides in Australia, said she plans to return home to initiate the process of enlisting herself and her family in the register, PTI reported.

”It is sad that my name is not there in the list. I will return to Assam in the last week of August and then initiate the process to get mine and my family’s name enlisted in the National Register of Citizens (NRC),” she told a television channel.

The authorities who drafted the register said they did not have the former chief minister’s legacy data, and thus it was not possible for them to ascertain whether she and her family members had applied to have their names included in the draft list, reported The Scroll.

Out of 3.29 crore people, a total of 2.89 crore have been found eligible and are included in the NRC. 40.07 lakh people have been left out from the list. However, the people left out from the list would get an opportunity to submit fresh sets of documents during the upcoming claims-and-objections process.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had assured  that the draft is not final and the government would not take coercive action against anyone.
