England thrash Australia, racks up record ODI score
Nottingham:
England thrash Australia by 242 runs and seal the series at Trent bridge 3-0 before racking up a world record 481/6 – the highest men’s ODI score of all time. This is Australia’s heaviest defeat and a record biggest victory and loss in terms of runs.
The previous world record was also held by England of 444/3 against Pakistan in 2016 on the same ground. However the highest ODI total is 490/4 by New Zealand Women.
As it happened:
England’s world-record total was founded on the back of a wonderful opening partnership of 159 between Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy, built on by a magnificent 147 from No.3 Alex Hales, given the afterburners by captain Eoin Morgan’s 30-ball 67, and only didn’t breach 500 when Joe Root and Moeen Ali failed to get going at the end. Jos Buttler’s contribution was a mere run-a-ball 11, which says something about the depth of power in this England side.
Australian bowlers were hammered right, left and center. The captain Tim Paine used 8 bowlers within 25 overs but none could stop the English side.Their frontline bowler, Andrew Tye gave away a century in just 9 overs. Jhye Richardson picked up 3 wickets but couldn’t contain the batsmen, he gave 92 runs in his 10 overs.
The Australian side without their star batsmen – Steve Smith and David Warner were clearly not up to the task. They slupmed up to 239 with 13 overs left in the match. The English spinners took 7 wickets between themselves (Rashid 4-47, Ali 3-28 ) to secure a 242 run victory.
England hit 62 boundaries in their innings which is a new world record. They surpassed Srilanka’s previous record of 59 boundaries against Netherlands.
Australia have earlier slipped to number 6 in the ICC ODI rankings their worst in 34 years.
