Asian Games 2018 : Vinesh Phogat Becomes The First Indian Woman To Clinch Gold In Wrestling

Vinesh Phogat have won the second gold medal for India at the 18th Asian Games held in Indonesia. She secured a comfortable win against Yuki Irie of Japan in the women’s freestyle 50kg. This is Vinesh’s second medal at the Asian Games, she had won bronze in Incheon four years ago. She also became only the fifth Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in wrestling, and the first among those to clinch gold.

Vinesh began the bout in an attacking way, nearly pinning her opponent inside the first two minutes but Irie bounced back. Vinesh led 4-0 at the interval, but lost a point in the second round. Irie scored a point by pushing Vinesh off the mat, but Vinesh then pounced on her Japanese opponent to pick two points in the last second of the bout.

Vinesh Phogat finally won by 6-2.
