Who were the Chapekar Brothers?

The Chapekar brothers ( also Caphekar, Chaphekar ) were youth of Chinchwad village. These brothers were Damodar Hari Chapekar, Balkrishna Hari Chapekar and Vasudeo Hari Chapekar.

Damodar Hari Chapekar and Balkrishna Hari Chapekar were two prominent revolutionaries of this time.

The Chapekar brothers were keen followers of Tilak, are known as ‘Chapekar Brothers’ in Indian history.

In 1985 A.D. they formed a secret organisation ‘Binashi Samity’ in Pune city.

Mr. Rand, the ‘Plague Commissioners’ and Lieutenant Ayerst were shot to dead by the Chapekar Brothers.

It was alleged that Mr. Rand and Lieutenant Ayerst had wrongfully oppressed the people in connection with the measures to prevent the plague epidemic. It was also alleged that these officers misbehaved with the plague patients brutally instead of rendering any duty.

Probably it was the first political murder in modern India.

The two brothers were hanged. The martyrdom of the Chapekar brothers helped to spread revolutionary spirit in Maharashtra.
