PhD mandatory for recruitment of university teachers: HRD ministry
New Delhi:
The HRD minister Prakash Javdekar on Wednesday has notified that Ph.D will be mandatory for the direct recruitment of assistant professors in Indian universities. The new UGC regulation in this regard will be in place from July 2021 and the same rule will also be applied for promotion to Assistant Professor (Selection Grade) in colleges.
In a statement it is said that it has done away with the Academic Performance Indicator (API) as a tool to measure the performance of college teachers. Instead, the University Grants Commission has introduced a new, simplified teacher evaluation grading system.
The HRD ministry said that publication of research in academic journals too is no longer a criterion for promotion. However, teachers can continue to conduct research.
