New Zealand defeat India 2-1, tournament now wide open

Mumbai:-

In the Match 5 of the Intercontinental Cup, New Zealand beat India 2-1 at the Mumbai Football arena today.

The All Whites applied pressure on the Indians from the start. New Zealand had come with a clear plan to mark Chhetri out of this game. The first half went unscored.

Indian Captain, Sunil Chhetri broke the deadlock at 47’ courtesy a howler from the New Zealand goalkeeper. An assist went to the goalkeeper who hit a clearance straight at Chhetri’s feat and the ball rolled into the net.

In a lapse of concentration and shoddy defence, Andre Jong scored a goal at 49’ and the final flourish came from the substitute Moses Dyer at 86’ and the goal seized the game for the Kiwis.

New Zealand were all over the Blue Tigers on the day. They had a ball possession of 60% while India had 40%.

India went into the match with 7 changes. Jeje had to wait until the second half to make his 50th international appearance. He did have shy at the goal in the end but only in vain.

The tournament is thrown wide open now with New Zealand and India both with 6 points. Now all eyes will be on tomorrow’s game when Kenya takes on Chinese Taipei. If Kenya win big India might lose out on a final berth.
