INDvsENG 1st Test Day 1 : Indian Bowlers Put India On Front Foot As England Lose 9 Wickets

Edgbaston, Birmingham :

The Indian bowlers have claimed 9 English wickets on Day 1 of the first test of the 5 match Test series against England. R Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers picking up 4 wickets including those of important ones – Aliastar Cook, Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes.

England playing their 1000th Test match won the toss and elected to bat first. Indian Captain Virat Kohli made a big decision of dropping the test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara and picked up KL Rahul instead, the bowling combination of 3 seamers – Ishant, Umesh and Shami, along with R Ashwin and all rounder Hardik Pandya was pretty much expected.

First Session :

R Ashwin bowled a peach of a delivery to get rid of England’s leading run scorer- Aliastar Cook for a mere 13. Keaton Jennings and captain Joe Root then steadied the ship and England went to lunch at 83-1.

Second Session :

Jennings was unlucky as a Mohammad Shami went on to knock his stumps. He scored 42. After a few overs, Shami trapped Dawid Malan in front of the stumps. He scored a mere 8.  England were in a spot of bother at 112-3 until Root and Bairstow joined hands. England went to tea at 163-3.

Third Session :

England Captain Joe Root completed 6000 Test runs as he raised his bat to after finishing a half century.

The match turned on it’s head when Joe Root wanted a couple but Virat’s throw was dead accurate at the bowler’s end. He scored a masterful 80 and stitched a partnership of 104 with Bairstow.

Bairstow was soon undone by Umesh Yadav. He scored 70. And then the English wickets went tumbling. Buttler went for a duck. Stokes looked uncomfortable for his 21 runs as he was caught and bowled by Ashwin. Adil Rashid scored 13 before Ishant wrapped him on his pads and Broad was caught wanting by Ashwin.

England finish Day 1 on 285/9.
