Earlier, Indian Captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field first. Jason Roy (38) and Johnny Bairstow (38) gave a good start to England but Kuldeep worked out his magic and picked up Roy, Root and Bairstow in successive overs. Morgan (19) fell to Chahal. Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler (53) then stitched a partnership of 93. Stokes played completed out of character scoring 50 off 103 balls. Moeen Ali (24) and Adil Rashid (22) gave England a respectable total of 268 to defend.
The total would have appeared difficult for India if England had picked up early wickets, which was not to be. Shikhar Dhawan smashed 8 fours in his 40 runs and gave India a perfect start. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli later joined hands and took India near the target. Kohli was out stumped to Rashid for a well made 75. Rohit made a staggering 137 (114) not out laced with 15 fours and 4 sixes. He brought up his 100 in 82 balls with a huge six. This is Rohit’s first century against England in ODIs and 18th in all.
A Rohit masterclass gives India the opening win! His 137* powers India to a comfortable 8 wicket victory against England with 59 balls remaining at Trent Bridge!#ENGvIND scorecard ➡️ https://t.co/gypXiagUMS pic.twitter.com/N7dH3V6u5f
