Mexico stun defending world champions Germany

Mexico has stunned defending champions Germany and beat them 1-0 in their opening FIFA World Cup 2018 game.

In his World Cup debut, Hirving Lozano scored Mexico’s winning goal in the 35th minute, picking up Javier Hernandez’s pass inside the penalty area and dodging Mesut Ozil before firing past Manuel Neuer from 10 yards.

After Lozano’s goal, Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa pulled off a spectacular save to keep the score level, palming Toni Kroos’ shot onto the crossbar while Julian Brandt failed to score from a good position late in the game.

Germany had a ball possession of 61% with a pass accuracy of 88%. On the other hand the winners Mexico had the ball possession of just 39% compared to the counterparts with a pass accuracy of 82%.

Germany had a total of 9 shots on the target but couldn’t convert any into a goal whereas the Mexicans converted 1 of their 6 attempts.

This famous victory is only Mexico’s second victory over the Germans.

Mexico’s Rafael Marquez , 39-year-old became just the third player to appear at five editions of the World Cup.
